Jane’s Addiction Releases New Single Days After Breaking Up
The Jane’s Addiction drama is pretty much over at this point, but we couldn’t miss out on one more story so that all the readers who have clearly never listened to a Jane’s Addiction album can loudly and ignorantly declare in the comments section that Jane’s Addiction isn’t metal. (They are.) Apparently the band recorded one more single right before they imploded in the most public way possible, making for a bit of an awkward release just a few days after they broke up for the umpteenth time.
The new single is called “True Love” and marks the second new single this year, and the second single with the full original lineup of the band since the release of their greatest album, Ritual de lo Habitual, in 1990. The band announced the new single in a post on their Instagram account with almost no details and limited who could comment on the post. It feels like they just wanted to throw the song out there and then ignore it as best as they can under the circumstances, which is a shame because it’s a pretty good song.
Where the band’s last single released back in July, “Imminent Redemption,” was a callback to Ritual’s most fast-paced tracks with its monster guitar solos and frenetic bass line, “True Love” is more of a slow, sultry ballad that’s actually a little out of character for the band. The two tracks indicate that, had the band not self-destructed in an embarrassing public scuffle, they could have possibly put together a new album that finally ranks up their with their best work, overshadowing their two albums that they recorded without original bassist Eric Avery, the first of which (Strays) was inconsistent, and the second of which (The Great Escape Artist) was utterly forgettable. Sadly, that seems to be off the table now and, even if the band reunite yet again, as the odds of them getting Eric Avery on board for another reunion seem extremely slim considering how reluctant he was to rejoin in the first place. The dream of a new Jane’s album with the original album is pretty much dead at this point.
