Devin Townsend Gets a Bit More Serious with New Single “Jainism”

0

A couple weeks ago, we learned that not only did Canadian metal master Devin Townsend have a new album coming out, but that he was willing to announce the whole thing with a hefty helping of his signature sense of humor with the new album’s title track “PowerNerd.” Today, however, we got a significantly more dour version of Devy, as he dropped his forthcoming album’s latest single “Jainism.”

As you can tell in the video below, Townsend’s got some shit to say in this new track, as the lyrics are a bit more doom and gloom than the last track. Speaking of the song itself, Townsend said this new song has a significant meaning to him.

“This next song was based on my connection to music in the mid-’90s. Also the idea of what it means to rend yourself artistically to an unresponsive world in 2024. I referenced THE WILDHEARTS in the chorus, as Ginger is one of our generation’s greatest songwriters.

“In preparation for The Moth, PowerNerd is meant to look back and celebrate the past before moving forward. Thank you for the support…back to work here :)”.

PowerNerd is the product of just 11 days of writing. Historically known for being extremely meticulous over his past works, Townsend he purposely sought to streamline his processes when making the record.

“It was a conscious thing. I thought, ‘I’ve spent so much time overthinking every aspect of my work – what would happen if I didn’t?’ Maybe I would have the opportunity to be a bit more direct with what it is that I’m trying to do. I really wanted to see if I could cut through some of the meandering.”

PowerNerd will be released on October 25, but you can preorder your copy today.
