Pearl Jam’s “Stranglehold” Cover Sure is Gonna Piss Ted Nugent Off

When it comes to cover songs, the best ones are always when the band doing the cover puts their own spin on a known track. Think Ghost‘s cover of “Here Comes the Sun” or Johnny Cash’s rendition of the Nine Inch Nails song “Hurt”. But what we’ve got here is a cover that’s sure to piss off the original artist, as historically left-wing rock band Pearl Jam turned famously right-wing Ted Nugent‘s “Stranglehold” into an anti-gun ditty.

During the band’s show in Baltimore last night, guitarist Mike McCready began playing the iconic riff from The Motor City Madman’s 1975 single, prompting frontman Eddie Vedder to begin singing the following before the band launched into “Even Flow.”

“I don’t own a gun, I don’t ever want to own a gun / I don’t own a gun, never want to own a gun.”

That’s… not gonna go over well with Uncle Ted. The dude’s famously pro-gun and conservative as fuck. He’s a huge fan of former President Donald Trump and has in the past threatened the likes of former President Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with various forms of violence. He’s also been an extremely vocal advocate for gun ownership rights and hosted a show on the Discovery Channel called Ted Nugent’s Gun Country.

Oh right — he also a terribly anti-trans, racist, and violent dude that allegedly shit his pants to dodge a draft and adopted a 17 year-old girl so he could marry her. So there’s that too.

The fact that a buncha liberals from the Pacific Northwest took his beloved song and made it an anthem against the thing he loves more than being a sycophant for El Trumpito will likely not sit well with the 75-year-old rocker.

We’ll just have to wait and see if and when ol’ Teddy responds. I’m sure it will be level headed and rational…
