Jerry Cantrell’s New Single “Afterglow” Gets Ethereal Music Video Treatment

0

After years of not getting any new solo material from famed Alice in Chains guitarist and songwriter Jerry Cantrell, we’re now getting a second album in as many years in the form of I Want Blood next month. Our veritable cup runneth over, as it were. Earlier this week, we got a live rendition of his latest single “Afterglow” and overnight, he dropped the official track and music video.

Long time fans of Cantrell will instantly recognize the tone in this song — it’s darker, yet mildly hopeful in a weird way. His vocal harmonies with backing vocalist (and Better Lovers/ex-The Dillinger Escape Plan) Greg Puciato are appropriately haunting. It’s all there to appreciate if you’re a fan.

Speaking of the music video itself, Cantrell opted to once again work with award-winning artist Matt Mahurin, who’d previously done the music videos for Alice in Chains tracks “No Excuses” and “Angry Chair.”

“Two of my all-time favorite videos I’ve directed are ‘No Excuses’ and ‘Angry Chair’ for Alice In Chains in the early 1990’s. To be able to once again offer my visual work to Jerry’s ‘Afterglow’ some thirty years later was a blast. From opera aria to pop tune, everybody sees a movie playing in their mind’s eye when they listen to a song. Jerry inspired a welcome fever dream that I was grateful to lure out of my mind’s eye.”

Cantrell is currently out on tour as the supporting act for Bush. There are only a few days left, though, so if you’d like to catch Cantrell (and Bush, I guess) live, you can find out where they’ll be playing and get your tickets below.
