‘The Voice Australia’ Contestant Kills Her Metalcore Cover of “Toxic”: Watch
I haven’t watched a contest singing show in literal years (I’m talking Clay Aiken-era American Idol years) so it didn’t really occur to me that I’d ever miss out on something I’d actually fucking like. Since I don’t pay attention to these singing shows, I didn’t realize Australia had its own version of The Voice, but the audition this one teen gave a few nights ago on the show gave me a reason to pay attention to it for a minute. Her name is Mol Turner, and she shocked the shit out of the judges with her surprise metalcore version of “Toxic” by Britney Spears. Watch the clip of it below.
Turner stood nervously on the stage before the introductory whirrs of the song started and at first, she was actually singing. The judges, which apparently feature that Adam Lambert guy (wait wasn’t his ass on American Idol, too?) and LeAnn Rimes, didn’t seem all that phased at first. But then, once the voice of that angelic demon began lulling us to awesomeness, the judges started collectively freaking the fuck out, in a good way. I wasn’t expecting the judges to be into it considering, well, who they are, but what that 17-year-old did up there better get her a vocal slot in a band easily (side note: she is the drummer of an Aussie band named Clueless, though).
“As someone who started screaming alone in my garage after listening to The Cleansing & IOWA a few too many times, I can’t believe it has landed me where it has.
“Metal & HXC have defined who I am & in a lot of ways saved my life throughout the past 7 years. This music means absolutely everything to me, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Fuck yeah, dude. I feel like a mother watching her kid triumphantly do some amazing shit as I sit in the audience all teary-eyed.
