This Will Destroy You Announce That They’re Splitting Into Two Bands Somehow
Everyone thinks it’s cool to watch Inception on mushrooms, but not when you’re trying to follow the plot. Still, I think I had an easier time trying to understand what the hell was going on in Christopher Nolan’s trippy 2010 film while actually tripping than I had when trying to understand what the hell post-rock/doom metal band This Will Destroy You announced on their Instagram on Monday. And I wasn’t even that high when I read it.
Apparently, the band is splitting into two bands who will both be called This Will Destroy You, at least for now. You know what, you can just read what the band wrote and, if you get what they’re saying better than I do, you can explain it to me:
“After years of collaboration, Jeremy Galindo and Christopher King have decided to pursue their own creative endeavors, focusing on solo, collaborative, and compositional work. As they embark on these new ventures, both Galindo and King will continue to honor their roots by touring globally with two distinct lineups of This Will Destroy You. Each lineup will perform different material from the TWDY catalog during their respective tours and shows, and both will release new music under separate project names in the future.
“Christopher King will be performing with Jesse Kees and Robi Gonzalez, who were instrumental in the creation of “New Others Part 1 and 2.” They will be joined by multi-instrumentalist, Masaru Takaku.
Jeremy Galindo will be touring with Johnnie McBryde, Nicholas Huft, and Ethan Billips.
“Tour dates for both groups will be announced soon, so keep an eye out for them!
“Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”
My understanding and continued support? I’m not sure I understand any of this, so how can I know if I support it? I mean, I’ve heard of bands literally splitting into two projects, like when post-hardcore act At the Drive-In split almost down the middle into The Mars Volta and Sparta. And I’ve heard of bands where there are conflicting claims over the band name, like when Gene Loves Jezebel split into Michael Aston’s Gene Loves Jezebel and Jay Aston’s Gene Loves Jezebel. But this doesn’t seem to be anything like that.
It sounds like, for one tour, there will be two bands touring under the This Will Destroy You moniker and, eventually, they’ll announce new names for the two separate bands. Okay, so maybe I did decipher what the hell they were talking about but, much like Inception, I could be completely wrong in my interpretation.
