Sharon Osbourne Urges Jack Black Not to “Cancel Tenacious D”

Friendship is rare, as they say, and as it stands we don’t really know what the future holds for famous friends Jack Black and Kyle Gass — otherwise known as Tenacious D. After Gass’ joke about the failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump caused a veritable shitstorm for the D, Black has since distanced himself at least temporarily from Gass and the band. Having been around as a duo since 1994, this apparent rift has had people in and out of rock talking.

Enter Sharon Osbourne. Never one to hide away from controversy, she weighed in on the matter in a recent episode of The Osbournes podcast. Though a lot of the discussion was surrounding the actual assassination attempt, Sharon said she felt the band shouldn’t have canceled the tour, let alone go on hiatus.

“I think that Jack should have not canceled the tour. Do your thing. People love you two, so go out and do your best. We all make mistakes — I do it every day!”

That’s actually a pretty cogent response from Sharon. She did go on about about how comedians can’t really be edgy anymore and all that regular “cancel culture” bullshit that doesn’t actually work or exist. But that’s neither here nor there. The clip below is kinda worth watching if only to see the Osbournes fumble around American presidential history, because historical scholars they most certainly are not.

For those that somehow don’t remember, Tenacious D was playing a show in Sydney, Australia the same day Trump was attacked. It also just so happened to be Gass‘ 64th birthday, so when a cake was brought out and he was told to make a wish, he responded with: “Don’t miss Trump next time.”

In the wake of that joke, Black put out a statement condemning the joke and saying he was canceling the tour.

“I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”

Gass also issued an apology, but that has since been taken down.
