Premiere: Hatchend’s Grindcore Pedigree Shows in Their New Single “Shackled Humanity”

Who says Scandinavia is nothing but pasty white dudes in black metal bands traipsing around the woods in corpse paint? Certainly not me and absolutely not the maniacal motherfuckers in Hatchend. And after you hit play on their new single “Shackled Humanity”, your perception of the region will be shattered as well.

Hailing from the magical land of Sweden, Hatchend is a crossover thrash/hardcore act that’s looking to plant their flag into the scene with their forthcoming debut release Summer Of ’69. But don’t take their newness to mean they’re inexperienced — this new quartet is actually comprised of members of other extreme underground death metal and grindcore bands like Deranged, Razorrape, Birdflesh, and Deathening. In short, they go hard.

From the relentless riffs and thundering bass to the rapid fire drums and abyssal vocals, it’s hard to imagine a universe where “Shackled Humanity” wouldn’t reduce a venue full of metalheads into an gnashing gyre of stomping fists and banging heads. For a little over three straight minutes, the track goes from zero to “holy shit” in no time at all.

Though the track feels pretty straight-forward, Hatchend drummer Rikard Wermén waxed philosophical about “Shackled Humanity,” explaining how it’s based on some deep, primal sense in all of us.

“I’ve said before and will probably say it again. You know that black eternal void you feel in your stomach? It’s like a wild beast you just need to tame as you’re scared to death what would happen if you let it loose. You’re falling deep into your own personal abyss of darkness and there’s… No return. We tried to transform that feeling into music, and ‘Shackled Humanity’ came close.”

Summer Of ’69 will be released on August 23 via Selfmadegod Records. You can preorder your copy today either from the label’s webshop or directly from Hatchend’s Bandcamp page.
