Nickelback Preemptively Responds to Anyone Who Might Criticize Deadpool and Wolverine
Deadpool and Wolverine comes out tomorrow and is already one of the most anticipated MCU movies in a very long time. Early reviews are mostly positive, with the movie holding an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of this writing. Still, despite the fact that this looks likely to become a very well-loved movie, Nickleback wants to make sure that nobody even thinks of criticizing this cinematic gem.
On Tuesday, Nickleback posted a video on their social media accounts of all the band members wearing Deadpool and Wolverine masks as they offered a pre-emptive retort to anyone who wants to criticize the upcoming movie, boasting the box office totals and awards received by the first two Deadpool films. That’s not really much of a defense against criticism, as plenty of movie trilogies end on their weakest installment, such as the original Star Wars trilogy, The Godfather trilogy, the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and the original Spider-Man trilogy. But Nickelback’s video makes slightly more sense if you understand that it’s a callback.
I’m sure you remember the successful 2018 film Deadpool 2, but do you also remember the re-cut PG-13 version called Once Upon a Deadpool? In that version, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) tells the story of Deadpool 2 to Fred Savage, leaving out the grizzlier and more inappropriate parts of the movie, thus parodying the framing device from The Princess Bride. In one of the scenes in Once Upon a Deadpool, Savage makes a joke about Nickelback and Deadpool gets very upset and goes on a rant defending Nickelback by listing their major accomplishments including their record sales and all the awards they’ve won.
It would make sense that Nickelback would take an existing joke that already worked and was quite popular and then regurgitate it in a less interesting way, as that’s pretty much the formula for how they make music. But it seems that Ryan Reynolds appreciated the tribute anyway, as, in the middle of an interview with Etalk, Reynolds was shown the Nickelback video and the stunned actor responded:
“My God, I love those guys.”
While I love Ryan Reynolds and appreciate his defense of Nickelback, I don’t think there’s a world where I’m going to stop making fun of Nickelback. If we did that, we’d have to choose another band to pick on instead, and that would inevitably be Papa Roach, who might not take it as well. So the Nickelback jokes shall continue uninterrupted.
