Congratulations Nikki Sixx on 23 Years of Sobriety
What’s this? MetalSucks saying something nice about Nikki Sixx for once?! What the fuck?!?! Someone check the weather down in Hell!
In all seriousness, the 65-year-old Mötley Crüe bassist took to social media last night to share an intensely personal success story. It turns out that yesterday was his 23rd anniversary for getting sober. In his post, he said the following:
“23 years sober today. Had a few runs at it before but I wasn’t ready to surrender completely to my addiction. Today I am the happiest I’ve been in my whole life.Thank you to those that shared their experience to help me understand the simple process of letting go.Nothing makes me happier than to see people who have lost hope to find themselves and change not only their life but their family’s too. #SobrietyRocks“
From early on in his career with the Crüe, Sixx was famously addicted to heroin, though he’s also admitted in the past to using other drugs like acid and cocaine.
Sixx himself even estimates that he’s overdosed multiple times in his life, with the closest call being the one he experienced on December 23, 1987. In that incident, Sixx was reportedly declared dead for two minutes before paramedics used two syringes of adrenaline to bring him back to life.
As we’ve seen in the case of so many other rock stars, as well as the people around us in everyday life, kicking an addiction is extremely difficult. And while you can become sober, most people that have struggled with addiction tell you that you’re never fully cured — it’s a constant battle to maintain sobriety and to never fall back into those bad habits.
We may not like Mötley Crüe all that much lately and we may dunk on Sixx and his bandmates when they obviously phone a show in, but there’s nothing to drag or make fun of here. We comment Sixx for reaching out and getting the help he needed all those years ago. Keep up the good work, man.
