Wildfires Force Down to Postpone New Mexico Show
In a circumstance that’s completely out of the band’s control, Down announced today that they weren’t able to play a show in New Mexico this Thursday because of wildfires burning in the region.
Dubbed the South Fork Fire, the blaze apparently started on the Mescalero Apache Reservation, resulting in the partial closure of U.S. Highway 70 and the evacuation of homes throughout the area. Looking at some of the imagery coming out of the area, it’s a scary situation that obviously transcends a single metal show.
“The entirety of the DOWN camp wish for the safety of everyone in the Mescalero Apache reservation, Ruidoso, and surrounding areas. Everyone in DOWN & Inn of the Mountain Gods is in agreement that we will reschedule the show ASAP. Sending best of vibes, hope, & love to everyone affected. @down_nola @innofthemountaingods”
Though it’s uncertain at this time when Down will be able to make up the show, that’s not what’s important right now. The venue where the show was supposed to take place, the Inn of the Mountain Gods, has opened its doors to serve as a temporary shelter for anyone that’s been displaced by the fire.
Following the decision to help affected communities, Frizzell Frizzell Jr., chief operating officer at Inn of the Mountain Gods, issued the following statement:
“Inn of the Mountain Gods has decided to reschedule the June 20–22 concerts due to ongoing wildfires in the Mescalero and Ruidoso areas. The safety and well-being of guests, staff, and the surrounding community remain top priorities.
“We deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause our guests, but our primary concern is the safety of everyone involved. We encourage our guests and the local community to exercise caution during this time and are committed to working closely with fire management teams to support our neighbors and provide shelter for those who may have been displaced by the fires.
“Inn of the Mountain Gods is still open and has set up temporary shelter in the convention center for those who have received evacuation orders. Donations are welcome and can be dropped off at the convention center.
“Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this challenging time. We are committed to supporting our neighbors and providing assistance to those affected by the fires.
