As we’ve already established on this website, we metalheads are massive nerds. Doesn’t matter if you disagree with me — you’re a nerd about something. Some of us nerdy metalheads manage to meld the two together, which is exactly what the five-person indie game studio Red Essence Games has done with their forthcoming action role-playing game Traveler’s Refrain.

Set in a magical forest, the game features a struggling musician whose sole purpose in the game is to be reunited with a long lost love. Armed with a magical instrument he can use to cast spells and interact with his environment, he heads out on his quest and meets a bevvy of characters along the way. After watching the trailer below, I’m getting some major Bastion vibes.

With music being a major focus of the game, it then makes sense that the company would recruit some actual musicians as voice actors. As such, they’ve got Andy Cizek of Monuments, Lee McKinney of Born of Osiris, solo artist Essenger, and Alexandra Norton of Echos lending their voices to various characters throughout the adventure.

Red Essence Games co-owner and lead artist Nik Hagialas said the decision to include actual musicians in the game’s production simply made sense both to the narrative and to the interests found within the company.

“My business partner and I are guitarists and huge metal heads, so we decided to bring the voices of our character to life with actual touring musicians.”

There’s no release date set for the game just yet, but you can download a demo of the game on Steam right now as part of Next Fest, which is going on until June 17.
