Livløs’ New Single “Usurpers” is an Epic Sci-Fi Death Metal Banger with a Kick-Ass Music Video
After listening to the lead single for their upcoming album The Crescent King a number of times now, all I can honestly say about Livløs’ “Usurpers” is that it’s fucking epic.
For nearly five and a half minutes, the Danish band not only hammers you with Thomas Dannemand’s thundering drum work, Benjamin “Atlas” Andreassen’s steadfast bass, and the riffage emanating from Franz Posch and Kenneth Breinbjerg’s hands, but it also aims to tell a bloody (and admittedly kick-ass) sci-fi story. And to that end, vocalist Niklas Lykke’s vocals provides ample emotion and gravitas to the tale at hand.
Speaking of the track and using some of the lyrics to embellish things a bit, the band said “Usurpers” plays a major part in the overarching story they’re weaving throughout The Crescent King.
“‘Usurpers’ is the first single from our upcoming album, The Crescent King. Play it now, play it loud—foul usurpers all!
“While staying true to the sound that has defined us over the past decade, we also wanted to branch out with the new album. This track, in particular, embodies this expansion. Doubling down, we created an animated video in the old-school art style that we know and love, encapsulating the conceptual story that unfolds over the course of these ten tracks.
“Upon this end of eventide, a fateful plot ensued. Please welcome ‘Usurpers.’”
Given the fact that the song is part of The Crescent King‘s storyline, it’s awesome then that the accompanying video is equally evocative as the track itself. Created by artist Simon Gorm Eskildsen, the animated clip is full of sci-fi trappings one moment and medieval castle intrigue the next. Replete with blood, death, sex, and betrayal, the video has a very striking Mike Mignola-esque art style that also kinda reminds me of that sci-fi show on Max called Scavenger’s Reign. It has a pretty similar feel and now I just feel like you should check that show out when you’re done watching this. But I digress…
It’s awesome to see a song and video come together to create an experience that really enhances both aspects. The dudes in Livløs have something here that I know I’ll definitely be following until The Crescent King drops on October 4. Though there’s no pre-order for the album at the moment, you can make sure you get your mitts on the “Usurpers” single today.
