Sh*t That Comes Out Today – May 17, 2024
We’ve got a doozy of a release day for ya, as a whole lot of anticipated records are now available. We’ve got solo efforts from both Kerry King and Marty Friedman, a live album from Jinjer, and a whole lot more to check out. It’s a veritable metal buffet, so dig in.
Cognitive
Abhorrence (Metal Blade Records)
We’ve got your tech death right here. Releasing their fifth full-length album, New Jersey’s own Cognitive are back with a 10-song slab of brutality. With themes ranging from mental health and addiction to video games, this thing goes all over the place. It’s a legit ass-beater.
Gatecreeper
Dark Superstition (Nuclear Blast)
There’s been a lot of talk in the MetalSucks mansion about how this band could be the next best thing out there today. Death metal’s been in a great place lately and Gatecreeper’s a prime example of why, with a potent sound that’s as melodic and heavy as it is uniquely their own, Dark Superstition is definitely one to check out.
Kerry King
From Hell I Rise (Reigning Phoenix Music)
Bald and tattooed with a guitar in hand, Slayer’s Kerry King decided to strike it out on his own (with the help of some heavy metal powerhouses) and release his own solo effort, From Hell I Rise. If you’ve heard the singles, you know that King was right on the money when he said this was effectively Repentless 2.0. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is entirely up to you.
Pallbearer
Mind Burns Alive (Nuclear Blast)
Doom metal abounds in the latest offering from Pallbearer. These guys have been around for almost 20 years and in that time, they’ve made a name for themselves as one of the best bands in the genre. Mind Burns Alive is often downtrodden, melancholy, and wracked with a sense of unease and uncertainty. Just like any good doom metal album should be.
Ufomammut
Hidden (Neurot Recordings)
Yet another big doom metal release dropped today with Italian outfit Ufomammut’s Hidden. This one received a pretty high score in our review, with Mandy Scythe saying the band’s tenth album has “an ear for detail” that keeps the band’s roots intact while moving forward with a “heavy, renewed sense of energy that fits in better with the modern world.”
