Gojira’s Mario Duplantier Flies Off The Handle with His Latest Drum Solo “Meteor”
As someone that doesn’t play drums and is sometimes barely coordinated enough to walk without tripping over my own feet, what I just witnessed in the video below is absolutely spellbinding. It’s no secret that Gojira drummer Mario Duplantier is a top tier drummer among the likes of other modern drummers like Mastodon’s Brann Dailor, Death Angel’s Gene Hoglan, and Converge’s Ben Koller (just to name a few). So any time the dude posts a drum solo, we’re gonna share it here.
For just under two minutes, the dude goes off on a piece he’s titled “Meteor”. Like the solos we’ve featured before, it has the Frenchman going off on his drums. I don’t even know how to describe it without sounding like a fucking knuckle-dragger. “Moustache man hit drums guud. Make cool sound.” And just like pornography, you’ll know good drumming when you see it.
It’s good to see Mario keeping up with his chops, considering there’s word that Gojira’s hard at work on a new album that he said is “going to be heavier” than the band’s 2021 album Fortitude.
“Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah. We work on new stuff for a long time, actually. We have a lot, a lot, a lot of ideas. We have structures of new songs. But we are so picky that we really want to take this time to drop something very unique. And why not having more songs to record? Instead of having 10 songs, maybe have like 15 songs; I don’t know. But we are working on it very hard. But it’s a bit early in the process to talk about the date of release and all that. But what I can tell is it’s on a good way. We are very proud of what we have right now.”
So hit play on the video below and just try to keep up.
