Dave Mustaine Makes Obvious Statement, Future of Metal is Fine “As Long As People Make Good Records”
Dave Mustaine is absolutely a metal legend, even if he’s not the most profound interview subject. In a recent interview with Diario El Salvador, as reported on by Metal Injection, Mustaine talked about the future of metal and, while he claimed that the ‘90s had a bit of a rough patch, he made the obvious statement that the future of metal still looks bright as long as people keep making good music. Yeah, no shit, Dave. Here’s the full quote:
“Well, I think as long as people make good records, there’s nothing to worry about. It went through a period in the ’90s when a lot of musicians tried to jump into the metal community and say they were metal players and they weren’t, really; they were just kind of normal players, and you could tell, and it really hurt our community. But these things correct themselves all the time, and I’m glad to see the community’s looking strong right now.”
Considering that the original interview was published in Spanish, and I assume it somehow got translated from English to Spanish back to English, it’s possible that something got lost in translation. But yes, Dave, as long as people keep making good metal records, metal will be good in the future. You’re officially the John Madden of heavy metal.
That being said, his comments about ‘90s metal is a little less obvious and a bit more of an insight. The whole nu-metal scene in the late ‘90s into the 2000s, whatever you think about its quality, wasn’t really in keeping with metal traditions, and it feels like the modern metal scene is a little bit more of a throwback to the early days.
