YouSuck: MetalSucks Readers Aren’t Stoked for Summer Slaughter 2024
Last week, the folks behind Summer Slaughter revealed the lineup for the newly revived touring festival. It came after weeks of teases and nostalgia-based marketing that showed past lineups featuring the likes of Cannibal Corpse, Goatwhore, Necrophagist, Dying Fetus, Job For A Cowboy… you get the idea.
Yet when it came time to announce the 2024 lineup, we got a list of bands that didn’t meet fan expectations. As a result, we ran a post saying that it didn’t hold a candle to past years and we felt like we were being incredibly fair. There’s no ill will toward bands like Veil of Maya or Brand of Sacrifice, but it’s just not the same caliber as previous years and fans noted that online. Yet despite the general consensus, festival organizers took to social media to bash our opinion and weirdly spout anti-vax garbage.
That was a weird flex, but we got to wondering exactly what you guys — the MetalSucks readers — felt about the lineup. What we’ve got below is the results of a poll we ran all weekend.
How Do You Feel About the Summer Slaughter Lineup?
Over the course of 72 hours, more than 900 of you guys came to vote on this year’s Summer Slaughter lineup and to say it was a landslide that you guys didn’t like what was announced would be putting it lightly…
According to the poll results we’ve got below, 736 respondents selected “this lineup isn’t great and I’m not going.” That’s a little more than 78%. That’s wayyyyyy more than a simple majority of people. All you’d need to do is look at the comments and see how some of these voters feel.
For example, website commenter Vulgerbutcher said, “After going to previous summer slaughter tours I was so excited for the comeback of one of the best metal tours since Ozzfest ended, then utterly disappointed in the lineup.” Similarly, Facebook commenter Codi Goodin said, “It feels like a cash grab revival when there’s so many hardworking bands that span across all the subgenres or even the ones who are directly death, grind, black, you name it, like they’ve done in the past. This isn’t even really a bad lineup, but for summer slaughter its lackluster.”
Comparatively, the next two groups of respondents were pretty much identical, with “It’s not the same Summer Slaughter but it’s alright” getting 87 votes and “Eh, I can take it or leave it” getting 85 votes. Instagram user travnort said, “The lineup was okay, didn’t really fit well with past tours but they need a new social media manager for sure.” Instagram user umitsashley33 also chimed in, saying “lineup isn’t bad, its that they labeled it summer slaughter”
That leaves us with the optimistic “This lineup is great and I want to attend” cohort. With just 34 votes over three days, we’ve got a pretty resounding response from fans. One website commenter cece said, “I don’t know why the lineup is getting so much hate, maybe I’m biased because I know (only?) three of the bands, but I look forward to this! Love veil of maya and tallah!! :)”
So there you have it. A vast majority of MetalSucks readers thinks this lineup missed the mark. I’m not saying that’s a super surprising reaction, but it’s good to gauge everyone’s opinion on the matter.
