To say the work of death metal great Chuck Schuldiner continues to live on well beyond his untimely death roughly 23 years ago would be an understatement. As fans all over the world continue to blast Death’s music and pay tribute with various pieces of art and covers of his tunes, Death To All has been out there touring on the music with the distinct drive to spread the Floridian’s masterful works around the world.

With their ‘The Scream of Perseverance Tour’ set to kick off next month, the band dropped a previously unreleased clip of them ripping through “Crystal Mountain” and damn it if it doesn’t kick all kinds of ass. The clip was recorded during the band’s performance at Graspop Metal Meeting 2022, with Steve Di Giorgio dedicating the song to Schuldiner.

Originally released back in 1995 on Death’s Symbolic album, this track remains one of Death’s most iconic tracks. Having been one of the original members to record the track all those years ago, drummer Gene Hoglan remembered what it was like to work with Schuldiner on the song.

“To the best of my recollection, Chuck wrote “Crystal Mountain” about his neighbors. Chuck was always a chill neighbor, and his neighborhood in the Symbolic era consisted of just a few homes, all spread out with a nice little acreage between each, with no fences. However, some new folks happened to move in next door. Very puritanical, extremely evangelistic and horribly judgmental, and they rather immediately took umbrage with Chuck. Perhaps due to his long hair, or the metal we’d be cranking from his garage as we rehearsed, who knows?

“So they decided to build an enormous fence on the property line. A gigantic eyesore, thoroughly blockading the view down the very lush and pretty street where Chuck lived. Only……they had misread their property line blueprints and mistakenly built this fence about a foot over the property line, therefore directly on Chuck’s property, with just enough room to give Chuck the working space to paint the most hilariously blasphemic and atrocious stuff on the side of the fence which faced their house. But after all, the fence was on his property, therefore becoming his fence, right? And if only those neighbors were not jerks…Man, did they ever lose it. God, we were dying.”

Starting next month, Death To All will continue its campaign of remembering Death and Schuldiner’s legacy with their ‘The Scream of Perseverance Tour’ with Cryptopsy coming along as support. During the run, which will kick off on May 18 and run until June 29, the band will play special sets at different dates. Some nights they’ll play the entirety of Scream Bloody Gore, while other nights will feature all of The Sound of Perseverance. Naturally, they’ll play some classics from the rest of Death’s discography each night, too.
