No, Butthole Surfers Aren’t Going to Reunite, So Stop Asking
There are folks across genre fandoms who would love to see Butthole Surfers reunite, but apparently that’s an option they won’t be considering any time soon.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, bandmates Gibby Haynes and Paul Leary talked about how much fun they had during their live shows … and how that’s not something they’re going to relive. In the interview, Haynes got especially candid about the idea.
“We’re not as good as we could be today, and that’s because I lost my shit. I did too many drugs. I totally screwed up the deal. It’s my bad. It’s on me.”
Though he agreed with Haynes, but Leary said he also made mistakes long the way, saying they were “damaged” people that not even a huge payday will convince them to officially reunite.
“We were some genuinely fucked up people. We’re good people, but we’re fucked up —We’re damaged.
“We’ve been getting six-figure offers to play live, but I just don’t want to do it. We’re really lucky to not be in prison, and I don’t want to push that anymore. I don’t want to be sending a bandmate home in a body bag or for a venue to burn down.”
Haynes also adds that his relationship with his son is more important to him than touring at this point:
“I have a 13-year-old son who is the fucking light of my life. I’ve got an actual family, and it’s awesome. Little league baseball and middle school basketball? Dude, it’s the shit.”
Butthole Surfers toured a lot in the 2000s, but by 2011, they were almost out of the public eye. They’ve played a few shows since then, and unfortunately, it doesn’t look like we can look forward to any more, at least for the time being.
