Rex Brown Says He’d Be Down to Record New Pantera Music
We’re now almost a couple years into the whole Pantera tribute experiment and slowly but surely, people have begun asking whether there’s a chance some new music can come out of this whole thing. Surviving members Rex Brown and Phil Anselmo have been touring the world with Zakk Wylde and Anthrax‘s Charlie Benante filling in for the fallen Abbott brothers, playing the band’s classic groove metal tunes wherever they can, so it only seems natural that the conversation would shift in that direction.
During a recent interview with Andrew Haug Radio (as transcribed by Blabbermouth), Brown was asked whether he would be interested in getting this new iteration of Pantera to write some new music. And while he wasn’t shy about his feelings on the matter, he remained a little coy about any further details…
“Oh, absolutely. Yeah, I could tell you more but I’m not going to.”
Wait… “I could tell you more but I’m not going to”?! What the fuck does that mean? Does that mean it’s actually being discussed and it’s in the works? Or is he simply saying he could elaborate about his thoughts on the matter and is just deciding to keep his deeper opinion to himself?
This isn’t the first time a member of the modern version of Pantera’s gone on the record saying they’d be interested in making new music under the iconic banner. Last month, Wylde said he would be interested in making music with his current Pantera compatriots, but only under the condition that the band no longer use the Pantera name.
“I think you would have to call it something else. You know what I mean? Pantera is those four guys. So, yeah, you can’t replace that.
“Yeah. If that was ever a bridge we crossed, we’d have to wait until we get there. But right now, it’s just the four of us celebrating what the fellas [from the classic lineup] created… I mean, how could you call it Pantera unless it was just pre-existing material and we were gonna record it — stuff that was in demo state or whatever, and it is songs that the guys wrote. But as far as new songs, it would have to be — you’d call it something else.”
