Aborted
Vault of Horrors (Nuclear Blast)
For nearly 30 years, Aborted has forged their own path through the death metal scene. This album sees the band joining Nuclear Blast for 10 new tracks, with each paying homage to classic horror flicks. Naturally, that sort of source material lends itself perfectly to the type of brutality you’d expect from these dudes.
BRAT
Social Grace (Prosthetic Records)
Barbiecore, bimbogrind, whatever the fuck you want to call this band, our very own Mandy Scythe loved the shit out of this record. In her review, she said Social Grace was “an exercise in blasting the face off of gatekeepers with some of their heaviest music to date.”
Leather Lung
Graveside Grin (Magnetic Eye Records)
If you live on the East Coast, you’ve noticed the weather cleared up just in time for this banger. Leather Lung’s debut full-length album grooves like no other, offering high grade stoner/doom metal that hits harder than any gravity bong or shotgunned can of Modelo to the face. It’s angry, defiant, and uncompromising in all the best ways.
O Zorn!
Vermillion Haze (Hard Drugs/Seeing Red Records)
Doom metal stalwarts O Zorn! are back with their sophomore full-length album Vermillion Haze. Our very own Max Heilman penned the review for this one, giving it high marks while noting the band’s maturation over the years. “Hooky, heavy, and grimy, Vermilion Haze finds O Zorn! more than earning their keep as one of Southern California’s most exciting bands within the sludge, doom, or heavy rock umbrellas.”
Vltimas
Epic (Season Of Mist)
Five years after releasing their debut album Something Wicked Marches In, international blackened death metal act Vltimas is back with their follow-up, Epic. Touted as a dark and unrelenting slate of tracks, this one benefits directly from the pedigrees of the band’s members, featuring current and former members of Morbid Angel, Mayhem, and Cryptopsy, to name a few.
