Scott Ian, Charlie Benante, and Dave Grohl to Release a Bad Brains Cover for Record Store Day
Some of rock and metal’s bigger names have gotten together to not only record what should be a killer cover, but also to help raise funds to help Bad Brains vocalist H.R. seek treatment for a painful condition.
In a social media post yesterday, Anthrax’s Scott Ian announced that he, along with bandmate Charlie Benante had joined forced with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl to record a cover of Bad Brains’ song “The Regulator” for a special Record Store Day release. Only 3,000 copies were pressed, so it’s sure to be one of the harder to obtain items when it drops on April 20.
According to Ian, both Anthrax and Foo Fighters were working on their respective projects at the same studio when the guys decided to get together and record something. Here’s how Ian explained it:
“GBI! Release date 4/20/24! It’s a Record Store Day exclusive – only 3000 pressed! Here’s the story: Anthrax were recording our new album at 606 and the Foo’s were there rehearsing at the same time. Dave had popped into the studio to hang and listen to what we were doing and we’d gone over to hear the Foo’s rehearse. I texted Dave the next morning and said: ‘Hey! Good to see ya the other day. Are you rehearsing today? I’ll be there doing guitars. Wanna record a Minor Threat song? Bad Brains?’ He replied immediately with the Spotify link for ‘The Regulator.’ I said I’d be there at 12:30pm and he said, ‘See you at 1.’ It was that simple.
“We recorded at 606. Charlie and I asked Dave if he’d play drums and sing as well, he was in. Charlie plays bass and I’m on guitar. Charlie did the badass art for the cover. GBI!
“The spark to do this was to raise money for HR’s healthcare. All the proceeds will be donated to him for that. And what better day to do it than Record Store Day? It helps Indie stores as well, win/win.
“We ripped ‘Regulator’ live in 2 takes, the way it should be! It was so much fun to get to play with Dave on drums and to hear his voice with my guitar! We’re all such huge Bad Brains fans and have asked WWBBD? (What would Bad Brains do?) many times. Hope you get a copy!”
As previously mentioned, all funds generated through the sale of the vinyl single will go to help H.R.’s bout with SUNCT Syndrome.
According to the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, SUNCT is a rare form of headache that’s most commonly found in men age 50 and over. SUNCT stands for Short-lasting, Unilateral, Neuralgiform headache attacks with Conjunctival injection and Tearing. Those suffering from the rare condition experience headache that is marked by bursts of moderate to severe burning, piercing, or throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head and around the eye or temple.” The pain comes on pretty quickly and can last from just a few seconds to four minutes for each episode, with people generally experiencing five to six attacks per hour.
So if you’re looking to pick up something cool and want to feel good about helping someone in the process, be sure to seek out G.B.I. and their cover of Bad Brains’ “The Regulator.”
