Ryujin Share New Single and Video “Gekokujo”
Japanese traditionalist metal band Ryujin have shared a new video for “Gekokuju” from their forthcoming album, RYUJIN, out January 12 via Napalm Records.
The band initially formed in 2011 under the name Gyze, but then later changed their name to the new moniker. This mission seems to be equal parts dedication to shredding and to telling stories, and we’re definitely cool with that. This new record plans to get
This week, they unveiled a new song from the album, “Gekojuko,” which you can stream below alongside the captivating music video. The song flirts with many genres including death metal, folk, and classic guitar virtuoso melodies. On paper, it might not sound like it should work, but it weirdly does.
The record features lyrics in both Japanese and English and guest features from Matthew Kiichi Heafy of Trivium. Ryujin blend classical Japanese elements into the polished metal they play.
Ryujin guitarist and vocalist Ryoji Shinomoto says about the concept behind the song:
“In Japanese history, ‘gekokujo’ refers to the act of a lower-ranking person politically or militarily overthrowing a higher-ranking person, violating the social order, and seizing power.
“I would say the song is Japanese horror folk metal. The music video also depicts Japan’s unique horror. Enjoy the dark side of Ryujin too!”
For the rest of the record, you’ll have to wait til January unless they grace us with another track in the meantime, but we can’t wait to hear more.
