Laura Jane Grace Drops New Single, “Cuffing Season”

Indie, punk, and queer darling Laura Jane Grace has just dropped a new single, “Cuffing Season,” perfect for the oncoming winter weather.

The song from the famed singer of Against Me! is ahead of her full album release, Hole In My Head, out February 16 via Polyvinyl Record Co. The song comes with a video that was directed by Margherita Ballarin and it’s deep, reflective, acoustic, and winter-ready.

Some of the themes the song touches on are aging, hardship, and resilience, things that a trans punk frontwoman getting up their in years definitely knows a thing or two about.

The new record was recorded at Native Sound in St. Louis, MO, and mixed by Matt Allison. From what we’ve heard of the record so far, it will have some throw-back, more classic and acoustic rock vibes, a lot less in-your-face, borderline metal punk and a lot more self reflection. It’s mostly just Grace on vocals, guitar, and drums, but she’s supported by Drive-By Truckers bassist Matt Patton on some of the tracks.

One of her already released singles, “Dysphoria Hoodie,” focuses on the struggles of being trans and wanting to hide in your favorite hoodie, but it’s a song many metal fans can relate to. In general, Grace said a lot of the songs on the album focus on her experiences in music so far.

“I think as you get older and go through life’s hurts and heartbreaks, it gets harder and harder to let yourself be open and vulnerable. But when you do, it can be so worth it even if you just end up hurt and heartbroken again. In the end, I don’t think you regret those kinds of losses. I think you regret not trying.

Until the record drops, we’re hoping for some more songs to roll out slowly, as well as maybe some tour announcements.
