Mikael Maglieri, Owner of Both Rainbow Bar & Grill and Whisky A Go Go, Dead at 73
When it comes to heavy metal’s early years out in California, two venues constantly come up as important stomping grounds for bands that would eventually grow to be massive acts: the Whisky A Go Go and the Rainbow Bar & Grill. Sadly, it was announced earlier today that the owner of both establishments, Mikael Maglieri, has passed away. He was 73 years old.
News of Maglieri’s death was confirmed on the social media pages of both locations, with the Whisky A Go Go posting the following statement:
He Was The Best Person In The World.
The Most Generous.
The Most Loving.
Just The Best Person In The World.
Thank You, Mikeal, For Everything. I Can’t Even Begin To Tell You How Much You’re Going To Be Missed.
Mikael Maglieri was the son of Mario Maglieri, who originally owned both locations and opened them in the 70s. Mario passed away in May 2013 at 93 years old. Mikael began following his father into the family business by starting off as a bar back, eventually working his way up into the company.
To say both the Rainbow and the Whisky had a massive impact on metal back in the day would be an understatement, as it was a regular haunt for musicians of all walks to go get a drink and party. Classic stories include members of Guns N’ Roses, Mötley Crüe, and perhaps its most iconic patron, Lemmy fucking Kilmister.
Our thoughts go out to Maglieri’s friends, family, and coworkers at this difficult time.
