Drummer Frank Bellucci Adds Some Old School Cool to Rob Zombie’s “Dragula”
In the long list of “songs that sound like background noise because I’ve heard it so much over the years,” Rob Zombie’s “Dragula” is absolutely high up on the list. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fun jam, but there was a time in the late 90s and early 2000s when this song was fucking everywhere. So yeah, it doesn’t even register for me at this point.
But when I saw the latest Drumeo video where they got freelance New York City-based drummer Frank Bellucci to participate in their “For The First Time” series, hearing his new take on John Tempesta’s drums made “Dragula” new again. And while John Tempesta’s drumming is completely unfuckwithable, the creative decisions Bellucci made on the track are super cool.
For those that don’t know, Drumeo’s YouTube page has a series where they get drummers to listen to a track without the drums and come up with their own drum section on the spot. It’s supposed to show how professional drummers use skills like active listening to come up with their part in the song in a matter of minutes. In the case of Bellucci, it took just a single take to lay down an exciting take on the classic 1998 tune.
One of the best parts about this YouTube series is they get non-metal drummers to come up with their parts for metal songs they’ve never heard and vice versa. I mean, we’ve had ex-stOrk drummer Thomas Lang tackling Metallica’s “Lux Æterna” after a couple takes, Jack Thomas’ one-armed take on Slipknot’s “Duality,” and even Megadeth’s Dirk Verbeuren’s version of The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” after somehow never hearing that one.
