Songtradr Acquired Bandcamp, Claims Artist’s Best Interests

Songtradr has acquired Bandcamp from their previous owners, Epic Games. Despite the annoying spelling of the new parent company, folks seem to think this could be a positive move.

In their official statement released September 28, Songtradr claim they will keep running Bandcamp like a music marketplace paired with social media, but also promise that artists will now receive “an artist-first revenue share.”

Paul Wilshire, CEO of Songtradr, says:

“The acquisition of Bandcamp will help Songtradr continue to grow its suite of services for artists. I’m a passionate musician myself, and artistry and creativity have always been at the heart of Songtradr. Bandcamp will join a team of music industry veterans and artists who have deep expertise in music licensing, composition, rights management, and distribution.

The subtext here seems to be that, even it’s being said in sugary corporate speak, Songtradr is implying they will pay artists more. However, Epic Games fired back that both companies feel equally about supporting musicians. Steve Allison, vice president and general manager, store at Epic Games, says:

“Songtradr shares Epic and Bandcamp’s values around ensuring artists are fairly compensated for their work.

“Bringing Bandcamp to Songtradr will make it easier for independent artists to connect with creators and developers looking to license their music and enable Epic to focus on its core metaverse, games, and tools efforts.”

So far, everyone seems to be slightly skeptical, but mostly optimistic, about the new takeover.
