Thy Art Is Murder Played Their First Show Without CJ McMahon
With all the drama and controversy surrounding Thy Art Is Murder lately, it could be easy to forget that they’re still an active band with commitments and shit. So naturally, they did what most bands do and took the stage, only this time with a pall of uncertainty regarding who was replacing CJ McMahon on vocals.
Last night, the band played Turbinenhalle 2 in Oberhausen, Germany and while they haven’t officially acknowledged this to be the case, internet sleuths all over the place have come to the conclusion that Aversions Crown frontman Tyler Miller will be handling the mic moving forward. This revelation falls in line with fan theories following the release of the band’s latest album Godlike, which they delayed in order to re-record McMahon’s vocal parts.
No matter how you slice it, the last few weeks for Thy Art Is Murder have been fucking bananas. Ever since CJ McMahon posted some anti-trans comments on social media, it’s been a clusterfuck of epic proportions. The backlash forced the band to post a pretty meek statement in support of the trans community that didn’t directly call out McMahon’s actions. Then they pushed the album back a week and well, pandemonium.
On release day, which was last Friday, the band put out a statement explaining that McMahon was fired because he was trying to essentially hijack the band to make them fall in line with his apparent political leanings. Alleged threats to “destroy the band from within” took place and rather than continue dealing with that shit any longer, they delayed the album so they could re-record McMahon’s parts with another singer behind his back.
The even crazier part was that McMahon didn’t even know he was fired. The dude was promoting Godlike on socials while the band was publicly distancing themselves from him. McMahon only learned he was out of the band after waking up and seeing it on social media. Fucking. Wild.
So yeah. Now we’ve got Thy Art Is Murder with a new vocalist on tour with the band. We’re still waiting for an official acknowledgment aside from a single photo on social media, but as of right now, this is all we know.
