Chris McMahon Responds to Being Kicked Out of Thy Art Is Murder
Thy Art is Murder made headlines yesterday when Chris McMahon was fired from the band, and it was announced that he would no longer be appearing on their new album. Now, McMahnon has doubled down on his stance and made a statement about not being sorry and his frustration with the band.
This happened on release day for the new record, Godlike. They pushed the release date back one week to yesterday, and now we know why. They rerecorded it last minute with a new vocalist, a fact McMahon learned along with the rest of the world via social media.
To put the comment below in proper context, here’s a quick recap of McMahon’s behavior. He was called out for posting on a video where a woman tells her child “you can be both” when the child responds they are both a boy and a girl. McMahon went far beyond saying he simply disagreed with that child’s right, and instead said that the woman in the video should be “burned to death.”
In response to his firing, McMahon posted a brief response saying he would go live that includes a dogwhistle to his original burning comment:
“I just woke up and saw the news. Yes this is how I found out. And yes it’s not the whole
story. I’ll be going live tomorrow at 5pm Sydney Australia time.Burn everyone to death ????”
He then posted a video, which he claims is the video he always wanted to share, since he says he was forced to make the apology.
The caption says:
“This is the 2nd video I made weeks ago the band never posted, the apology video you all saw I was forced to make. I actually told the band to fire me as I didn’t want to apologise as I didn’t have anything to apologise for, the band said that if I left the band would be done so for the band I made the apology video you saw but this is the video I meant. I was shut down about posting this”
As McMahon doubles down on his bigoted stance, fans are being divided into two groups: those who support his rhetoric as “free speech” and think the band won’t be the same without him, and those who are glad the band are taking a stand and moving on with a new vocalist. Unfortunately, it’s not surprising to see the same old debate over hateful folks being called the victims because they are being “cancelled,” with no thought being given to the folks who used to love this band and now may feel betrayed by McMahon’s actions.
