Tomb Mold Wear T-Shirts and Shorts on Magazine Cover, Metal Internet Explodes
There’s no shortage of things to get outraged about on the internet, whether it’s founded or not. Plenty of people too terminally online to see past their own noses are constantly getting up in arms about meaningless shit. Case and point is a recent bit of “drama” that’s broken out on social media over the recent cover of Decibel Magazine, featuring Canadian death metal outfit Tomb Mold. More specifically, it’s about what they’re wearing.
It all kicked off a couple days ago when Decibel revealed the cover on Twitter (I know it’s X, sue me). As you can see in the publication’s tweet, the dudes are all wearing t-shirts and shorts, looking comfy as hell if I’m being honest. Yet for some reason, that was enough to spark some really dumb reactions.
In perhaps the most maligned comment came from one user who said that even though they dug the new Tomb Mold release, the band failed to “meet the moment” with their look since getting a magazine cover “fucking means something” before saying the genre “needed more Akercockes.”
Another detractor of the band’s cover said the band looked “like they wanna lecture me on chainlink or some other crypto,” which is actually pretty fucking funny. Other users harped on the band’s look, with one person saying metal is “one of the few places to be over the top” and that they like it when a band “puts in the extra effort to look cooler than whatever they threw on to go to the grocery store.”
So much for metal being a scene for outcasts and individualists. Guess we all need to dress the same and follow a dress code…
Yet despite all the negative comments, plenty of actual musicians and fans of the band came out in support of the cover, asking the only pertinent question in this situation: “who the fuck cares?” Undeath, Imperial Triumphant, and KEN Mode came out in support of Tomb Mold’s wardrobe choice.
Ultimately, all that matters is that the band is happy with their cover. And to that end, guitarist Payson Power gave a rather unequivocal response to the nonsense:
