Eshtadur Brings Their Brand of Death Metal Deep Into the Shadows with “Umbra”

0

Colombian melodic death metal outfit Eshtadur is currently on the road throughout the U.S. with Summoner’s Circle on the From Beyond Tour, but that’s not stopping them from releasing a new single along the way. Focusing on their specific brand of cosmic melodic death metal, the one-man project released a music video for the act’s latest single, “Umbra.”

Released on its own, the track is dark and dense, almost like its namesake — an umbra is the fully shaded and darkest part of a shadow, commonly realized during an eclipse.

To match that level of darkness, the band recruited the Caldas Symphony Orchestra to add its cellos, violins, and horns to the band’s sound. Additionally, they used a Colombian folk instrument known as the tiple, along with speakers of “an ancient native language known as “Purhepecha” originating from Michoacán (precolombine ancient America C.1200).”

According to the band’s mastermind Jorg August, “Umbra” stands out among the rest of the project’s discography as a particularly haunting track.

“This is the purest and darkest song I’ve ever written, evoking existence and cosmos. There’s a unique moment, a special frame of time when conjure is in its most powerful phase, the darkest side of shadows where light is almost gone, the umbra, far beyond the penumbra, and there… what happens, what can’t be measured, what can’t be touched or palpated, intangible obscurity, mighty magic in the hands of a mystique and ancient entity, the shaman.”

You can check out the music video below or listen to the track on one of your favorite streaming platforms. Tour dates for the remainder of the From Beyond tour can also be found below the video.
