Eye Am, Featuring Members from Type O Negative and Crowbar, Dropped a Catchy Sludge Metal Tune as Their First Single

What happens when you take the likes of Type O Negative guitarist Kenny Hickey and drummer Johnny Kelly and combine them with Crowbar’s frontman Kirk Windstein and ex-Crowbar bassist Todd Strange? It turns out you get a kick ass sludge metal tune. At least that’s what happened with the band Eye Am and their first single, titled “Dreams Always Die With The Sun.”

As you’ll hear in the music video below, Eye Am’s first song is catchy as hell. To my ear, it kinda sounds like a chilled out Soundgarden, with Hickey’s vocals coming across very Chris Cornell-esque. It’s just such a cool sound, complete with downtuned riffage and a super infectious hook. It’s also real great to see members of Type O Negative back out there — even if it’s not the doom and gloom that we used to get with their previous efforts.

While speaking with WRIF, Kelly said the band intends to continue writing new material this month.

“[Andrew Spaulding] literally picked me up from the airport and drove me to rehearsal [to write the song]. And the guys were in the room. And I just put my suitcase over to the side, set up the kit and we started working on the song. And then the next morning we went to the recording studio, tracked all the drums. And then I was on a plane. I don’t know where I was going after that, but I had to leave right after we were done tracking; I think my flight was at six in the morning the next morning. So I was there just literally for a few hours.

“We are going to New Orleans at the end of June to do more writing and recording. If we get like a whole week, who knows what can happen?”

So here’s hoping we get more Eye Am jams soon. If this is just a proof of concept, I can’t wait to hear what the full product sounds like!
