Shi*t That Comes Out Today – March 24, 2023
Happy Friday—spring has sprung and there is a TON of good stuff out today, so let’s get straight into it. As always, you can find physical versions of many of these titles via our friends at Gimme Metal.
Acid King
Beyond Vision (Blues Funeral)
Long-running stoner doom outfit Acid King do things very slowly, having released only a live record and a promo sampler since 2015’s Middle of Nowhere, Center of Everywhere. Beyond Vision makes the wait worth it with thick riffage, heavy psychedelia, wandering-but-not-lost compositions and sole founding member Lori’s positively hypnotic vocals. The songs are long and the jams are extended, but that’s why you’re here, right? Right?
Dawn Ray’d
To Know the Light (Prosthetic)
UK-based anarcho black metal act Dawn Ray’d continue their guitar/drums/violin assault on album number three, To Know the Light. Coming at a time when songs of resistance feel as important as they ever have, Dawn Ray’d’s latest effort pulls off the hard-to-do task of making antifascist black metal that has a strong message without compromising creative, intense songwriting. Just listen to “Go As Free Companions” to hear the various corners of the trio’s sound.
Kings of Thrash
Best Of The West…Live At The Whisky A Go Go (Cleopatra)
If you read MetalSucks on the reg, you’re probably aware that David Ellefson was booted from Megadeth and began Kings of Thrash, a Megadeth tribute act who also do original music sometimes. They dropped a probable Dave Mustaine diss track last month and now they’ve delivered Best of the West, a live album recorded at the Whisky A Go Go. While this album is more of a novelty for diehard ‘Deth fans, it’s pretty cool to hear Ellefson, Jeff Young and Chris Poland attack these classics.
The HIRS Collective
We’re Still Here (Get Better)
Honestly, who isn’t on We’re Still Here, the new record from The HIRS Collective? The massive, 17-track album features artists from all across the spectrum—members of Full of Hell, Converge, The Body, My Chemical Romance, Garbage, The Locust, Escuela Grind, Thursday, Touché Amoré, Gouge Away and more appear—and it is pissed off. The collaborative approach to songwriting that they began on their last release has allowed The HIRS Collective to become a more dynamic beast, with the end result being a chaotic, angry and unified release.
