James Hetfield Says Metallica’s Full of “Really Average Players”

0

Actually average heavy metal players, you may want to sit down. Your definition of “average” is about to get all kinds of fucked up if you take the word of Metallica frontman James Hetfield as gospel, because he thinks he and the rest of the biggest metal band in the fucking world are mediocre at best.

During a recent interview with Cigar Aficionado (transcribed by Far Out Magazine), Hetfield credited the unique chemistry between himself, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Rob Trujillo for their success.

“I know individually we’re all really average players, but when you put us together something happens. Something really happens…. Getting up and jamming with people is like a nightmare for me.”

So take notes, mediocre metal musicians — you might be able to overcome your mediocrity by finding the right group of people to jam with. Good luck! It’s just wild to think anyone from a band that consistently sells out arenas and has put out some of the most important heavy metal albums of all time can think they’re simply average.

Later on in the interview, Hetfield opens up about his initial bouts of stage fright when the band was starting up. Some of his comments even corroborate some of Dave Mustaine‘s past assertions that James was too shy to be the band’s frontman, leaving him to pick up the slack on stage.

“Early shows were really difficult, I was so shy. [I] didn’t want to talk. I’d have the other guys in the band introduce the songs. [Now] I feel so comfortable up there, it’s so weird. Sitting down one-on-one with someone is a lot more anxiety ridden than standing up in front of 10,000 people, 20,000 people.”

It’s a good thing Hetfield’s gotten over that stage fright, because the band is going to kick off its M72 World Tour this August in support of their forthcoming album, 72 Seasons. If you want to catch them live and see what real “average players” looks like playing to a sold out stadium, check out the full list of dates below.
