Sh*t That Comes Out Today – February 17, 2023
Another week has come and gone, which means it’s time to blow your disposable income on heavy metal records so you can forget that the world sucks. We’ve got you covered on the good shit, as always.
Hellripper
Warlocks Grim and & Withered Hags (Peaceville)
James McBain’s Hellripper is probably the best thing going in black, thrash or black-thrash metal right now. The prolific musicians turns his attention from Satan to Scottish folklore on new album Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags, while at the same time merging new influences into the band’s sound. Can’t recommend this album enough.
Avatar
Dance Devil Dance
Swedish alt-metallers Avatar drop lucky number nine, which features the already-released single “Violence No Matter What,” which features Halestorm vocalist Lzzy Hale. The band try out a bunch of new influences here, so if you’re into Avatar’s modern take on nü/alt-metal, check out Dance Devil Dance for a few surprises.
See You Next Tuesday
Distractions (Good Fight)
When See You Next Tuesday dropped “Hey Look, No Crying,” their first single in 14 years, in November, it showcased a more mature sound for the band, who came of age in the balls-to-the-wall era of Myspace mathgrinding deathcore insanity. Distractions is the best record See You Next Tuesday have ever made: the songs are still technical and intense, but the songwriting is upped significantly.
Code Orange
What Is Really Underneath?
Never afraid to commit to the bit, Code Orange have released What Is Really Underneath?, a companion to their 2020 album, Underneath. The album “contains elements of the 2020 album while digging deeper down into the Underneath universe with original unreleased companion pieces,” according to the official press release. If you’re a diehard Code Orange fan, this is an interesting experiment. They also released a short film and a computer game with it, because of course they did.
Siege of Power
This is Tomorrow (Metal Blade)
The death metal supergroup featuring members of Autopsy (and all Chris Reifert’s associated bands), Aspyx, Thanatos and more return with their second LP, This is Tomorrow. Do you like death-thrash? (Of course you do, you’re reading MetalSucks!) You’ll like Siege of Power.
