Sh*t That Comes Out Today – January 20, 2023
RIP to every other band that had an announcement to make today. Check out these new releases if you don’t have Panteramania.
Katatonia
Sky Void of Stars (Season of Mist)
The latest album from Katatonia is a masterclass in feeling and melancholy, which is exactly what you want when you listen to new Katatonia. In an interview with MetalSucks, drummer Mojjo discussed the challenges of recording:
“It’s always a new challenge with every new album because the guys write songs in a way that I’ve never experienced before with other musicians. They approach the material in a different way. They build the structure of the songs in a different way and obviously also write the drum patterns differently than I’ve ever come against.”
Tribunal
The Weight of Remembrance (20 Buck Spin)
Hail doom. Hailing from Vancouver, Tribunal are a duo that understands the pomp and grandeur of old doom as well as the heaviness of the Peaceville style. Dual vocalists Soren Mourne (bass/cello/vocals) and Etienne Flinn (guitar/vocals) are a powerful force, trading off as the music descends into despair. Get it here.
Turbid North
The Decline (The Pyramid)
Continuing to walk the line between death metal and Black Sabbath, Turbid North’s latest album The Decline is a beast. From our review:
The tenth of ten songs is “Time,” which makes reference to the motif that began the album with post-metal delicateness and a storming-over-the-hills rhythmic thumping that caps off the work with a musical circularity and a colossal finishing move consisting of stacked chords strong-armed into a monolithic chord progression that concludes an album that may be obvious in the splaying out of its direct influences, but nonetheless makes for an enjoyable listen of a band that never stops growing, incrementally or otherwise.
