Sh*t That Comes Out Today – January 13, 2023
Nine months ’til Halloween but it’s Friday the 13th, so close enough! Treat yourself with these titles from Gimme Metal.
Ahab
The Coral Tombs (Napalm)
Nautical funeral doom crew Ahab return to the high seas after eight years of mostly not releasing music (with the exception of a 2020 live record) but their music is no less epic because of the time off. The Coral Tombs is an expansive, massive fucking album. Available now.
Beyond the Black
Beyond the Black (Nuclear Blast)
German symphonic metal unit Beyond the Black waited until album number five to do a self-titled release. Whether or not this is the definitive version of Beyond the Black remains to be seen, but Beyond the Black is a stripped-back and stripped-down album, delivering the goods and not wasting time. Don’t waste time on getting your copy, either.
Obituary
Dying of Everything (Relapse)
US death metal masters Obituary reign supreme on their new album, which shows some of the most energy and creativity since the band reformed. From our review:
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The old adage holds true on Obituary’s 10th studio album, which sees the band further sharpen their axes and ready their blunt objects. Dying of Everything is as pure a death metal album as you’ll get in 2023 and that’s a good thing. Long live death and long live Obituary!”
Screamer
Kingmaker (Steamhammer)
Heavy metallers Screamer keep on plugging along with their old-school stylings, this time with new guitarist Jonathan Aagaard Mortensen. The synth-tinged heavy metal edges into power metal territory but it’s a glorious ride all the same.
Ville Valo
Neon Noir (Heartogram)
On his first solo outing, former HIM frontman Ville Valo reminds listeners why HIM was the face of heavy music in a prior decade. Neon Noir is heavy and sensual, bringing both a Type O-type heaviness and something you can dance to. Get yours.
