New York’s Noise Rock Mainstays Unsane to Return for a North American Tour Next Year
There are few bands that called New York City home in the late ’80s that hit as hard or as loud as Unsane. The trio’s uncompromising approach to live performances and their punchy, heavy mix of punk and metal serve as the DNA for many of today’s noise metal acts and starting next February, the forebears are coming home to show ’em how it’s done.
Starting in Alberquerque, New Mexico and ending at Austin, Texas, Unsane’s North American tour spans 20 days and brings their destructive force to a long list of venues west of the Mississippi.
The last time we wrote about Unsane on MetalSucks, we reported on Chris Spencer’s decision to leave the band and focus on his other project, Human Impact. At the time, it spelled certain doom for the noise rock act, but a certain twist of fate called the COVID-19 pandemic gave rise to a sound that Unsane was all too well equipped to produce once Cooper (Made Out of Babies) and Jon Syverson (Daughters) joined the mix.
“During the pandemic, me and my friends Cooper and Jon started playing the early Unsane material for fun. Now that the lockdown is over, we’re super excited to get out and play this stuff for people. The new line-up is much more high energy as is the early Unsane material. We’re fucking psyched to get out there!”
The band is currently on tour in Europe and the U.K. And while they’re stoked to head back to the U.S. for a run of shows, Spencer said their time so far playing old material has allowed him to reconnect with the band he helped form all those years ago with original members Pete Shore and Charles Ondras.
“For me, getting to play the early material that I had written during a super chaotic period in my life and the city of New York feels amazing. Unsane never did a majority of this stuff after Charlie passed away, so to have the chance to revisit it now really brings back a lot of the personal shit that was going on at the time. The uncompromising nature of the material is nightly catharsis that is much needed after the shutdown of the pandemic!”
