Dave Mustaine Wants to Write Music with James Hetfield Again

Self-proclaimed “alpha male,” perpetually jilted ex-member of Metallica, and Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine recently revealed that he’s been “secretly hoping” that he could sit down with an old bandmate of his and make some new music together.

The revelation came during an interview with Andrew Daly of Vinyl Writer Music, during which the redheaded shredder discussed the process of recording The Sick, The Dying… and The Dead, the misconceptions he’s seen people make about the record, and the future of his legendary thrash band Megadeth.

And while most of the question and answer section seemed pretty innocuous as far as Dave Mustaine goes, one juicy little morsel stands out above the rest. It turns out Mustaine has some hope that he’ll be able to get into a recording studio with Metallica frontman James Hetfield and create some new tunes together.

“I have been secretly hoping there’d be a day where James [Hetfield] and I can write together again. I think the world really does want us to do that, and I think there is a pretty good possibility of it happening down the line. I do think that it’s possible that one day James is going to come around and that he and I are going to be able to do something together again. I guess that’s one of the things that has always kept me pushing forward. I think it’d be good for Megadeth, and it could be great for Metallica too.”

Man, could you imagine what that record would sound like? James would have to take the frontman role on it, since Dave’s voice isn’t what it used to be and he’s a significantly better lead guitarist. James’ right hand also puts him among the elite rhythm guitarists of all time, so that placement once again makes sense. I wish we got to hear more about the kind of music he’d love to make with Hetfield. Are we talking an acoustic album or a brand new metal outfit featuring two of the genre’s most driven frontmen?

Either way, given the back and forth relationship Mustaine has had with his former bandmates, the odds of this sort of thing happening could be slim at best.

If you’d like to read more about what went down with the bass tracks on Megadeth’s latest offering and what Mustaine attributes to the longevity of his career, head over to Vinyl Writer Music to read the full interview.
