Morbikon Brings Us a New Black Metal Supergroup
Just in time for black metal season, when the air gets colder and the days get shorter, Morbikon are a black metal supergroup that sounds more like a fantasy football lineup of extreme metal talent than an actual band.
Featuring guitarist and bassist Phil “Land Phil” Hall of Municipal Waste, Cannabis Corpse, and Iron Reagan fame; Dave Witte of Municipal Waste and Discordance Axis on drums, and vocalist Mathias “Vreth” Lillmåns of …And Oceans and Finntroll, the band are getting ready to drop Ov Mournful Twilight, out October 28 via Tankcrimes. We’ve already seen the dudes in Municipal Waste take on all types of genres, but until now, black metal was uncharted territory.
Inspired by melodic death metal and Scandinavian black metal, the band deliver a heavy, epic sound that does their previous ventures justice and also expands into new territory. Hall said this was a chance to try new things in the metal space.
“Morbikon, to me, is an opportunity to explore new atmospheres and new realms of extreme metal. I wanted to fill it with memorable hooks and punishing moments. I am very happy with the result of these songs and hope everyone notices the amount of detail that has been added to every corner of the music. I also have to give Dave Witte a lot of credit for laying down amazing drum tracks that added so much to these songs.”
To give us a taste of the impending face-meltingness, Morbikon released “Cursed To March On Shattered Limbs,” which you can check out below. Hall said the track required him to try a new style of writing, which he said was a welcome challenge compared to his other work.
“This is a special track to me. It’s probably the first six-plus minute track I have ever written. I put a lot of effort in making it as dynamic and memorable as possible. I noticed early how strong it was turning out, and it is definitely a standout track on the album. Enjoy!”
Ov Mournful Twilight will be out October 28 and is currently available for preorder via Tankcrimes.
