Mike IX Williams Claims a Young Randy Blythe “Used to Beg” to Sing Eyehategod Songs on Stage
We all have that dream of performing with our favorite bands, but with enough time and persistence, Lamb of God‘s Randy Blythe got to do just that. While speaking with the Mike James Rock Show at Bloodstock Open Air, Eyehategod frontman Mike IX Williams spoke about the band’s 2016 U.S. tour with Discharge and Toxic Holocaust.
As you may or may not remember, both Blythe and Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo rose to the occasion, filled in for Williams on those dates as he was recovering from a liver transplant.
In the interview, transcribed by Blabbermouth, Williams said the idea of bringing Blythe on to sing his parts stems from Eyehategod’s early shows and Randy’s persistent request to sing songs with them whenever they came to Richmond, Virginia.
“Randy is an old friend of ours. I met him when he was just a little kid coming to Eyehategod shows, being annoying. He used to ask — beg us, actually; I shouldn’t say ask — he would beg us to sing one of our songs during the set in Richmond, Virginia, where we played. So it’s pretty interesting.”
At that time, Williams was urged by doctors to have his liver replaced after years of abuse. Fans banded together to donate more than $70,000 to help pay for his medical expenses — because of course they did, this is America after all.
