Watch: Stranger Things Actor Joseph “Eddie Munson” Quinn Practices “Master of Puppets” for His Finale Scene
Whether or not you’ve seen the Season Four finale of Netflix’s mega-hit original show Stranger Things, you’ve probably heard about the scene in the season’s last episode where main character Eddie Munson (played by Joseph Quinn) plays Metallica‘s “Master of Puppets” on guitar. The relatable character saves his friends from the show’s dark forces with his performance, but, as usual, the internet isn’t satisfied. After the finale aired, a slew of internet commenters began to question whether Quinn actually played the song, which was recently confirmed in a video posted to Youtube.
Quinn told Entertainment Weekly in May that he was already familiar with the instrument and kicked his practice routine into overdrive when he saw the material he’d be working with in season four.
“I wouldn’t consider myself a brilliant guitarist, but I can play,” Quinn told Entertainment Weekly back in May. “That was very lucky because those scripts came out, I think, at some point in the pandemic. I did start practicing pretty furiously.”
In the same interview, the Stranger Things actor told Entertainment Weekly that he listened to a “lot of heavy metal” to provide more authenticity to his character. Quinn connected with a few metal heavyweights for the role—the Ronnie James Dio estate, whose estate loaned him the Dio backpatch he wears throughout the show, and Tye Trujillo, son of longtime Metallica bassist Rob Trujillo, who recorded extra guitar parts for the scene.
Metallica received a large boost from their inclusion in such a pivotal scene in the show. “Master of Puppets” entered the Spotify ‘Top 50’ chart both globally and for the United States.
It seems like that performance was also Eddie’s death scene, but we here at Metalsucks happen to believe that makes the young hesher a hero. The popularity of Stranger Things also put Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” on the chart.
