Suicidal Tendencies’ Instagram Account Suspended Over Band’s Name
Suicidal Tendencies is one of those band names that didn’t seem like such a big deal thirty years ago but some might consider outré by today’s standards. I don’t personally find it offensive; I’d argue the band isn’t making light of suicide. Others might argue differently, though. At the very least, it’s easy to imagine the name raising some eyebrows.
This is a long-winded way of hypothesizing how Suicidal Tendencies recently found themselves suspended from Instagram for nearly a month. According to the band, it was, indeed, their provocative moniker that got them in trouble with the social media platform:
“So as a lot of you already noticed, our Instagram account was down for the last 3 weeks. Long story, this had nothing to do with ‘us’, but everything to do with our name :)
“This isn’t the first time we’ve been flagged but hopefully it will be the last. We’ll go into that more later, but right now we want to focus on the positive and give our beST to you all and say thanks for always STanding with us!”
I’m not shocked this happened, but I was taken aback to learn how long it took the band to fix it. I mean they’ve been around for like forty years. Surely someone at Instagram knew who they were.
It also makes me wonder why a band like, for example, Prostitute Disfigurement (or, come to think of it, Suicide Silence) hasn’t run into a similar issue. Maybe someone just has to complain to trigger action. Like most things related to social media and Facebook-owned properties in particular, I assume things behind-the-scenes are largely unregulated and haphazard.
I guess it’s irrelevant now. Still. Pretty silly.
