Wargasm’s “Salma Hayek”: U Jam?
Back in May, Sumo Cyco’s Skye Sweetnam (try saying that ten times fast) recommended Wargasm on her MetalSucks list of 10 Heavy Pop Songs Metalheads Will Love. And I didn’t pay attention because I don’t much care for Sumo Cyco.
But then I read the press release announcing the debut of their new music video, “Salma Hayek,” and they said a bunch of words that all served as delicious, delicious bait to my particular breed of fish:
“[An] ode to Tarantino, Salma Hayek, loud noises, darkness and sex… heavily inspired by the cult classic From Dusk till Dawn.”
So yeah I went ahead and watched the video and, uh, yeah, pretty interesting stuff right here. It sounds kinda like the band modeled their sound entirely on the Spawn soundtrack, which consisted entirely of collaborations between metal bands like Metallica, Slayer, and Korn with electronic artists like Moby, Prodigy, and The Dust Brothers. It’s undeniably catchy and it makes me feel old (Wargasm frontwoman Milkie Way (LOLOL) was -1½-years-old when From Dusk till Dawn was released) in more ways than one (I find this particular style of pop-infused metal to be very Millennial) and I’m pretty sure I’d never wanna hang out with any of the people who made it. I can neither promise that I’ll never listen to it again nor that I will definitely listen to it again. Also I think Vince might really like it? Basically, it confused me in all sorts of ways and I’m ready to go back to bed now.
