Dave Grohl Says He Almost Joined Gwar
Today in Oh, What Could Have Been..!: Dave Grohl has revealed to Rolling Stone that he was once extremely close to becoming the drummer for GWAR.
Naturally, this was pre-Nirvana and pre-Foo Fighters, when Grohl was still a teenager.
Sez Grohl:
“GWAR were looking for a drummer. And I talked to their guitar player Dewey [Rowell, a.k.a. the original ‘Flattus Maximus’] about it. And he’s, like, ‘It’s great, and you get to design your own costume.’ As drummer, you don’t want something that covers your face fully. You want your arms to be free. So I was, like, ‘Cool.’ So I started kind of drawing this thing. At the time GWAR was a band that would draw like 700 people, right? Which is huge. And then the more I thought about it, am I really gonna invite my uncle to see me play when there’s like fake blood and cum shooting all over the place?”
You heard it here first, folks: Dave Grohl only plays in bands with real blood and cum shooting all over the place. None of this pretend shit for him!
Kidding aside, Grohl’s career obviously worked out pretty nicely, and GWAR continues to be bigger than any one member. So while’s fun to think about Grohl might have brought to GWAR, this doesn’t seem like it was ultimately much of a loss for either party.
