Max Cavalera: Soulfly Fired Marc Rizzo for “Personal Reasons”
It’s a bit late to submit for this year’s Daytime Emmys, but hopefully Max Cavalera’s Soulfly can make it in just under the wire. Because in the past few days, the band has turned into a total soap opera.
To review: Soulfly announced late last week that Fear Factory’s Dino Cazares would be joining them on their upcoming U.S. tour. At that time, they made no mention of guitarist Marc Rizzo, who has been in the band for almost twenty years, and also plays in another one of Cavalera’s projects, Cavalera Conspiracy.
Almost immediately thereafter, Rizzo launched a new project, Hail the Horns.
(Quick digression: Hail the Horns is a truly awful name for a band. It sounds like the name of package tour no one will ever actually repeat aloud because it’s so lame (remember The Cool Tour, LOL?). It makes me wonder what names Rizzo didn’t go with.)
And then, finally, over the weekend, Rizzo revealed that he was indeed out of Soulfly. Furthermore, although he gave no specific reason for his departure from the band, he implied that it had something to do with receiving due credit for his work:
“I’m going full forward with my solo project. That’s really where my heart is at, where I get my writing credit, where I get credit for my work and all my hard work gets proper credit. It’s a healthier environment.”
Now, Rizzo didn’t have to say any of that shit about credit and his solo project being “a healthier environment,” so I guess technically, he threw the first punch. Still, it was a weak punch. Nobody read that and went OH SNAP!.
Still, it clearly pissed off Max Cavalera, who has since released a catty video that amounts to “He didn’t break up with me I broke up with him”…
“So right now, for the tribe, I wanna address something that is going on with Soulfly. Of course, it’s about Marc Rizzo. He did not leave the band. We decided to part ways with him due to personal reasons.”
…and a patronizing farewell:
“I wish Marc the best on his career. I wanna thank Marc for the 18 years with Soulfly.”
So that’s kinda sad. It’s like nu-metal’s Ozzy and Zakk broke up, only if Zakk went off to form a new band called Hail the fucking Horns.
