Wacken 2022: First Bands Announced
Having been forced to postpone Wacken Open Air for the second year in a row, festival organizers have now turned their attention to next year’s edition of the event.
The first handful of bands have been announced, and unsurprisingly, it’s already an impressive line-up:
- Judas Priest
- Limp Bizkit
- In Extremo (25th anniversary show)
- Rose Tattoo
- Lacuna Coil
- GWAR
- Death Angel
- Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons
- Thundermother
- All Hail the Yeti
- Auðn
- Wolves In the Throne Room
- Crypta
Limp Bizkit are the standout name on that list — not because they’re amazing or whatever, but because they seem like they’re by far the least-trve band in the mix. Will Fred Durst and company be warmly received by that crowd? I obviously don’t know better than the people who book Wacken, but man, they feel out of place here.
The rest of the bill thus far is stellar, though. Like, I can’t think of a legitimate diss against any of them. Rose Tattoo is… um… old? That’s the best I got.
Additionally, the following additional bands are set for Wacken Wednesday, the festival pre-show (separate ticket required):
- Avantasia
- Gloryhammer
- Brothers of Metal
- Varang Nord
So unless something goes hideously, insanely awry between now and next summer, it sounds like Wacken will be back with a bang.
Wacken 2022 is set for August 4-6 (of 2022, duh).
