Sh*t That Comes Out Today: June 4, 2021
You know it’s a slow release week when I’m like “well, the new Atreyu isn’t that bad.”
Atreyu
Baptize (Spinefarm)
I realize this is going to sound insane, but Atreyu are kind of like an American Babymetal: a pop act that uses heavy music as the basis for its sound. So yeah, their combo of new-metal, metalcore, and screamo is enough to send metalheads screamo-ing into the streets. However, the band delivers massive hooks and catchy anthems like few of their peers. I’m not really a fan but even I can admit that if you approach Baptize with an open mind it’s some really satisfying junk food. Former vocalist Alex Varkatzas isn’t missed.
Red Fang
Arrows (Relapse)
Portland-based katana-wielding maniacs who will do anything for pizza, Red Fang return with their most ominous album cover and some of their catchiest sludge punk anthems to date. While they don’t take themselves very seriously, they approach their music with the utmost professionalism, abusing their amplifiers until the feedback puts the mic in their hands and lets them kick out the jams. Make sure to watch the music video below if you haven’t yet.
Somnuri
Nefarious Wave (Blues Funeral)
Somnuri emerge from behind the wall of sleep with a haymaker to the side of your head. These filthy Brooklynites share sonic squat space with bludgeoning behemoths like High on Fire, Mastodon, and Kvelertak, but while those barbarian hordes are content to lumber forward, Somnuri go straight for the throat. Nefarious Wave hits like a tsunami and continues to wash over the listener for long after.
