Megadeth’s David Ellefson Shuts Down Social Media Accounts Following Sex Scandal
Fallout from the recent sex scandal surrounding Megadeth’s David Ellefson continues: the bassist has now disabled comments on his Facebook page, set his Instagram account to “private,” and shut down his Twitter account altogether (screen caps below).
The scandal began earlier this month after an Instagram user, identified only as ‘woahworst,’ started sharing accusations that Ellefson had groomed an underage girl. As proof, they offered extremely explicit video of Ellefson masturbating during a video chat, as well as screen caps of damning text exchanges between Ellefson and the young woman in question.
Although the evidence demonstrated that Ellefson had participated in sexual video chats with a woman who was not Julie Foley, his wife of 27 years, it did not include any indications that the woman was underage at the time of these events.
To that end, Ellefson subsequently released a statement in which he admitted that the leaked materials are “certainly embarrassing,” and “not something I’m proud of,” but also claimed they “were taken out of context and manipulated to inflict maximum damage to my reputation my career and family.”
Additionally, he included a purported statement from the young woman he is said to have groomed. “Yes, those video calls did happen,” the unidentified woman said in that statement, “but I was the one to initiate them and never was I underage, I was always a consenting adult.”
Megadeth have said they’re “watching developments closely.”
Megadeth have a tour with Lamb of God scheduled to kick off in August, and a new album on the way as well. So this will resolve itself one way or the other fairly soon.
