Mastodon Debut New Song “Forged by Neron”

Y’all have heard us geek out about DC Comics’ Dark Nights: Death Metal a buncha times in the past; co-created by artist and celebrity metalhead Greg Capullo (Spawn, Batman, Disturbed), the series has stayed VERY true to its name, what with involvement from Dave Lombardo and Zakk Wylde (among others) and special alternate covers featuring artists like Ozzy and Megadeth.

Now DC has announced that they’re gonna release a full-on soundtrack for this whole shebang via Loma Vista on June 18. It’s being executive produced by Tyler Bates, who composed the music for films like John Wick and Guardians of the Galaxy (and has been a frequent collaborator of Marilyn Manson’s… yikes). It will feature tracks by Mastodon, Chelsea Wolfe, In This Moment’s Maria Brink, former The Dillinger Escape Plan frontman Greg Puciato, Carach Angren, and more.

They’ve wisely made the Mastodon track, “Forged by Neron,” the lead single. That means you can listen to it right now! Huzzah!!!

Says drummer Brann Dailor of the song:

“We are super excited and honored to be part of the Dark Nights: Death Metal Soundtrack! We’ve all been fans of DC Comics and the Batman universe since we were kids, so it really means a lot for us to be able to add something to that world.”

Check out the track below. The insane guitar solo that takes up the final thirty seconds of the song makes it worth a listen alone.

The soundtrack is available to pre-order now on digital download, CD, and 2xLP—with exclusive Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman vinyl variant covers, 11 limited edition character trading cards, and more.

Additionally, DC and Loma Vista Recordings today announced Special Edition Soundtrack Variants of “Dark Nights: Death Metal” issues 1-3, featuring Rise Against, Denzel Curry, and Grey Daze (the late Chester Bennington’s pre-Linkin Park band) on custom comic covers, and released alongside each artists’ respective flexi singles. You can preview those covers below, and pre-order ’em here.

In other Mastodon-related news, the band was apparently very productive during the pandemic, as they’ve said they might release TWO new albums sometime in the not-too-distant future. Learn more about that here.
